Tabita Green Memorial Service

Monday, July 13, 11:00 am
Outdoors at Good Shepherd backyard in Spilde’s Grove, west of parking lot

If you are able to attend, please do sign up at the Sign-Up Genius link here. The family doesn’t want you to worry about “taking a spot” from someone. They so value the presence of anyone who is able to attend. The service will be recorded and shared at YouTube.com on the Good Shepherd Decorah channel.

Outdoor Communion Reminder

Outdoor communion services will be short and will provide an opportunity to gather together for prayer and Holy Communion. If we need to cancel a service due to weather, we will inform participants via email 3 hours prior to the service.

Because we care deeply about your safety and well-being, a number of measures are being taken to limit possible exposure to COVID-19:
• Each service will be limited to 50 people.
• You can enter the backyard from the parking lot. Please maintain physical distancing from the time you exit your vehicle until you re-enter it.
• You are asked to bring your own chairs. There will be folding chairs at the church for those who need them and they will be cleaned by ushers.
• Everyone over the age of 2 will be required to wear a mask. Masks will be available for those who do not bring them.
• When you arrive, please check in with an usher so they can mark you on the list of attendees and help you with physical distancing during seating.
• We cannot provide a tent for shade and allow for physical distancing so please bring protection from sun, bugs and light rain. (Set up will hopefully allow people to sit under the shade of trees.)
• There will be limited access to indoor restrooms (one person at a time in the building).
• The service will not involve congregational singing and Pastor Amy will use a microphone to amplify her voice.
• Communion will be offered using a single-serve cup with a wafer of bread attached. Physical distancing will be practiced as households are ushered to the table. Communion will be distributed without physical contact.
• Please keep your mask on while you go through the communion line. Remove it back at your chair to partake of holy communion.
• Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms needs to stay home.
• Please be advised that the CDC recommends that those at high risk for a more severe COVID-19 illness (people over 65 and those with underlying conditions) avoid gatherings.
• If you do test positive for COVID-19 after attending one of these services, you need to contact Pr. Amy right away. She will honor confidentiality and will work with local authorities for contact tracing.

July 8 and 12 – Communion Services in Good Shepherd Backyard

We will be offering two identical outdoor worship opportunities on Wednesday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 12 at 4:00 p.m. These services will be short and provide an opportunity to gather together for prayer and Holy Communion.

Because we care deeply about your safety and wellbeing, a number of measures are being taken to limit possible exposure to COVID-19:

  • Each service will be limited to 50 people. You are  asked to sign up using SignUp Genius or by calling the church office. This will allow us to have a safe number gathered and will allow for contact tracing should that be needed. Please plan to sign up for only one service to allow more people to attend.
  • There will be limited access to indoor restrooms (one person at a time in the building).
  • The service will not involve congregational singing and Pastor Amy will use a microphone to amplify her voice.
  • You are asked to bring your own chairs. We will have circles marked on the lawn for each household to help with physical distancing. There will be folding chairs at the church for those who need them and they will be cleaned by ushers. Families with children are welcome!
  • Everyone over the age of 2 will be required to wear a mask. Masks will be available for those who do not bring them.
  • Communion will be offered using a single-serve cup with a wafer of bread attached. Physical distancing will be practiced as households are ushered to the table. Communion will be distributed without physical contact.

Thank you for helping us to gather in a way that is safe and inclusive for our community. All are welcome!

If you cannot attend, we can extend the table of Holy Communion to you. Please be in touch with Pr. Amy about options that might work best for your situation. We plan to offer more worship services like this throughout the summer. Online worship will continue to be offered on Sunday mornings including Sunday, July 12.

AN INVITATION TO PRAYER AND BELL RINGING

This Monday and every Monday at 11:00 a.m. you are invited to join in silent prayer as the Good Shepherd bell is rung to mark lives lost and affected by the coronavirus pandemic. We will ring along with other faith communities in Decorah and on behalf of communities without bells.

Prayers for this time have been provided by Sojourners Ministry and can be accessed here:  National Mourning and Lament Prayers

You have FOUR options to engage in prayer in community …

  • Go outside your house to hear the bells being rung throughout Decorah.
  • Pray inside at 11:00 a.m. in solidarity with others in our community.
  • Stay in your vehicle at Good Shepherd and listen to the bell.
  • Pray with others in Good Shepherd’s backyard. You are most welcome to do this if it is safe for your health, and …
    • You are not displaying COVID-19 symptoms.
    • You are wearing a mask.
    • You practice physical distancing by standing at least 6 feet apart.
    • Please bring a copy of the prayers with you to the backyard or pull them up on your phone. A few copies will be available in the dropbox by the parking lot door.
    • Please let neighbors and guests of Good Shepherd know that they are welcome to participate.
    • We will pray silently on our own using the handout or our own prayers as the bell is rung.

Physical distancing is hard to do especially when others are not doing it. This brief gathering in our backyard can provide an opportunity to practice physical distancing and practice asking for what is safe for us and our neighbors. Together we can say to one another, “I’m going to step back now to protect you,” or “Let’s stand a bit further apart here.” If we can do this well, we will be able to do more in the backyard together, soon!

As we begin gathering again as congregations, congregations will need to create a new culture. “This new culture will be marked by a willingness to put the safety of others ahead of our personal preferences and a willingness to hold ourselves and others accountable. It will require a culture that is willing to call someone out with love and clarity when it sees a new protocol slipping. Safely reopening will only be possible through a mass commitment to new norms and a culture that is constantly asking, ‘How can we help not be the one to make someone else sick?’ Reopening will require training a cadre of champion leaders who will build a new culture of doing church.” Rev.
