2016 Lenten Organ Recitals Begin Wednesday

The public is invited to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s noontime Lenten Organ Recital Series on Wednesdays, March 2, 9, and 16 in the sanctuary. The performances will start at 12:15 and finish by 12:45.

The opening recital on March 2 will be played by Michael Reiter, Luther College Keyboard Technician with a degree in church music from Pacific Lutheran University and experience as a church musician in the Pacific Northwest and Southern California. March 9 will feature Luther College Organist and Music Department Chair Gregory Peterson, who served as Good Shepherd’s organist when he was a student at Luther, and subsequently served as organist at the famous Old South Church in Boston. The final recital, on March 16, will be played by Brad Schultz, Visiting Instructor of music at Luther College and organist for Luther’s student congregation.

The Hook and Hastings Organ at Good Shepherd was acquired in 2009. This 2-manual, 8-stop, 11-rank organ was built in Boston in 1883 as a parlor organ for use in a private home. Acquired in 1973 by Pastor Paul and Ruth Tweeten, the organ was moved to the Midwest and in 1990 underwent an extensive rebuild by J.C. Taylor Organmakers, in Kaukauna, WI. After being damaged in a storage location, the organ was once again refurbished and restored by Jim Taylor in 2008, prior to its installation at Good Shepherd.

Attendees are welcome to bring brown bag lunches which can be eaten in the Fellowship Hall afterward. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. For further information, contact Brooke Joyce, Good Shepherd’s Director of Music, who coordinates this series.
