Reconciling in Christ

A summary about the concept of the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) program is provided by the program website:  RIC Resources

The Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Program is for congregations, synods, colleges, seminaries, and other Lutheran organizations. Lutheran communities that publicly welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people are accepted onto the Reconciling in Christ Roster which now exceeds 600 settings.

Good Shepherd enthusiastically endorsed this program in 2007 after a congregational vote at the annual meeting.  To date, it is one of three Lutheran congregations in Winneshiek County that have been added to the RIC roster.  The Good Shepherd congregation started the process of consideration by appointing a committee to study the program and provide a series of educational meetings.  A number of LGBT families were asked to give their testimonies about the importance of the program.  The committee was guided by the resources of the RIC Program which provided a pathway for the congregation to officially approve being added to the RIC roster.

Statement of Welcome

All are welcome at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. God makes no exceptions. In the spirit of Jesus Christ, we offer trust and respect to all, including those who may experience alienation, distrust, or rejection. We rely on the healing, unconditional love of God to shape our community in the name of the Good Shepherd. In keeping with our welcome, Good Shepherd is a Reconciling In Christ congregation, affirming our welcome to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer identifying persons to participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Commitment of Good Shepherd

To demonstrate the commitment of Good Shepherd to RIC, the RIC logo is displayed on our website homepage, the exterior church sign and the entry doors.   The Statement of Welcome is printed in all bulletins.  The pull-down menu under the “About” tab on the homepage features a brief description about Good Shepherd with a link to the RIC website.  Pastor Amy Larson’s “Welcome to Good Shepherd!” statement also includes a link to the RIC website. The last Sunday in January, the congregation celebrates Reconciling in Christ Sunday with a special recognition during the service
